While Scully said he knew by 1970 that he never wanted anything to do with manufacturing drugs, Sand was unrepentant. Scully and Sand wanted people to have the same insight and intense experience of oneness and empathy they had while tripping. The money came from proceeds of sales of psychedelics from Sand’s STP lab. The following year, Scully was introduced to Nick Sand, another underground chemist, and they collaborated in San Francisco to produce STP, a new psychedelic which was not yet illegal. It was the year after the “Summer of Love” when thousands of flower children flocked to San Francisco to get high and groove in The Haight, espousing peace, love and Utopian ways. Within a few months it produced roughly 3 pounds of LSD, or enough to make 4.5 million hits of “Orange Sunshine,” a nickname for the orange-colored, barrel-shaped pill that produced an especially powerful psychedelic trip.

Back in Cali, they could sell a single pound for four times what they paid for all 88 pounds! “You don’t want to get your hash in Turkey—the stuff’s not that good and it’s expensive,” the hitchhiker cautioned them. Travis first fell in love with hash during his high school days at the Golden Bear—a famous bar in Huntington Beach where surf guitar king Dick Dale used to perform. But to turn on the masses, they’d need to produce hundreds of millions of hits of acid—and to do that, they’d need money.

If only we could have found a way to weave it into the social fabric so that society would provide a backdrop of appropriate expectations and rituals for the experience.” “I know that whenever I took LSD,” he says, “I felt a very strong impulse to want to share this magical experience with everyone, immediately. Instead, patients are treated with “MB22001,” a proprietary formulation developed by PsyGen and licensed to a Vancouver-based psychedelic medicine company that trades publicly on the Canadian securities exchange. ” The formula van der Hyden had learned from Sand, who’d had it passed down from Bear himself, was to be used in the lab.
- Ashbrook was charged under the RICO Act “Kingpin Statute” for 36 counts from the Operation BEL indictments—carrying a penalty of life without parole and confiscation of all properties.
- The former was described by some as a hippie mafia, a group of California surfers who evolved into a worldwide drug distribution network.
- “She had this lovely, charming quality,” she says.
- The parahippocampal cortex (PHC) has previously been linked with (1) music-evoked emotion, (2) the action of psychedelics, and (3) mental imagery.
There are very few physiological effects, even with very large doses of the drug. Most people who have used ALD-52 and 1P-LSD note a lack of clear differences between the two — both in terms of onset, potency, and duration of effects. ALD-52 is a homolog of 1P-LSD (nearly identical molecular structure), and both need to be metabolized into LSD before they exert any psychedelic effects. While it’s not as likely to produce out-of-body experiences as compounds like N,N,DMT, or 5-MeO-DMT, even in high doses, the active dose is significantly smaller. It’s converted in the liver to LSD, which then exerts the characteristic psychedelic effects.

There were so many people that claimed to be in the Brotherhood that weren’t really in the Brotherhood; when the indictment came down, my mother sent me a copy of the wanted poster she took off the post office wall, and I didn’t know over half the people on it.” “They took every bust over a whole period of time and put it all together to make it look like they did all that right then. “I was in Honduras at the time, and I got warned shortly after that happened that, ‘They know where you’re at and they’re coming to get you.’” Yet again, Travis (and many of his Brotherhood cohorts) went back on the run. On May 1, 1971—the very day he was supposed to turn himself in to go to prison—Travis took off for Honduras. With a crowd of 10,000 plus high-ass hippies growing restless, Travis tried to persuade Hendrix to get back on stage by offering him some crystal acid. Hynson—who had starred in the surfer movie Endless Summer a few years earlier—was collaborating on a new hippie art film that would eventually become the cult classic Rainbow Bridge.
- Facing 56 years in prison, Scully managed to elude prison because the search was ruled illegal, and he decided to quit the drug game and go clean.
- In December 1962, Sand had his first psychedelic experience with mescaline sulfate.
- Most people won’t be able to tell the difference between them.
- An early study reported that ALD-52 surprisingly did not produce the head-twitch response, a behavioral proxy of psychedelic effects, in mice.
In July 1966 Owsley rented a house in Point Richmond, California and Owsley and Melissa Cargill (Owsley's girlfriend who was a skilled chemist) set up a lab in the basement. The 30-year-old Owsley took the 21-year-old Scully as his apprentice and they pursued their mutual interest in electronics and psychedelic synthesis. Scully soon learned that Owsley Stanley possessed a large amount (440 grams) of lysergic acid monohydrate. Scully knew the government would move quickly to suppress LSD distribution, and he wanted to obtain as much of the main precursor chemical, lysergic acid, as possible. In his junior year of high school, Scully completed a small linear accelerator in the school science lab (he was trying to make gold atoms from mercury), which was pictured in a 1961 edition of the Oakland Tribune.
What Does ALD-52 Feel Like?
The first psychedelic he synthesized was DMT (dimethyltryptamine), which was, at the time, only available as an intravenous injection. Sand recognized that psychedelics could be used to bring about this awakening, which, together with the help of key influential figures of the 60s psychedelic era, guided him in the production and distribution of these drugs on a massive scale. Sand continued to explore other substances, including peyote cactus, DMT, and marijuana, and immersed himself in the philosophies surrounding consciousness expansion with psychedelic drugs. Appearing in 1968 as an orange tablet measuring about 6 mm across, "Orange Sunshine" acid was the first largely available form of LSD after its possession was made illegal. They produced and distributed drugs in hopes of starting a "psychedelic revolution" in the United States. It became one of the iconic drugs of the late 1960s, nicknamed “Orange Sunshine” because of the orange-coloured barrel-shaped pill form that it came in.
Much of it reads more like fiction than history. The Brotherhood's story is “the most surreal saga of the 1960s that has never been told,” writes journalist Nicholas Schou, whose new book, “Orange Sunshine,” is as close to an “authorized” story as there's likely to be. Calling themselves the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, they were acid evangelists who soon became known as a “hippie mafia.”

It’s estimated that ALD-52 is roughly 20% milder than LSD taken at the same dose, so it still doesn’t take much for the effects of ALD-52 to become overwhelming. High doses of this compound are still going to produce powerful psychoactive effects and can be just as jarring as any other lysergamide, including LSD. The come-up of ALD-52 is smooth and steady and far less likely to cause users to experience come-up anxiety. Many people who take ALD-52 enjoy its milder, gentler nature.

“But for those who have, and that of course includes chemists, we know that there’s a qualitative difference in the experience.” “Very few people in the world have ever tried really pure LSD,” he says. In PsyGen’s labs, van der Heyden has determined that some street LSD may only approach 50 percent purity. In 2019, he founded PsyGen, supplying legal psychedelic material for clinical trials. Witnessing the changes in clinical — and cultural — attitudes toward psychedelics over the past decade, he knew he had the opportunity, and the knowledge, to get in on the action.

That hidden chapter of history had its start in late 1968 when the lab was set up in Windsor. Although they opened a storefront called Mystic Arts World on Pacific Coast Highway, drugs were always the primary source of the brotherhood’s solvency. Griggs, Schou writes, “would recruit everyone he knew — surfers, street fighters, pot dealers and petty crooks — into a tribe of people who viewed acid as a sacrament, a window into God itself.” By decade’s end, the psychedelic messengers had sidetracked into a smuggling operation that made the group one of the largest drug cartels in America.
Sand on the other hand, had different plans and while out on appeal bolted from the law and spent the next 20 years of his life on the run. He had earned a Ph.D. in Psychology while in prison and vowed never to return to manufacturing LSD. In 1974, Scully was sentenced to 20 years in prison for LSD manufacturing and distribution, and Sand got 15 years. Scully was arrested at the Napa Airport in May 1969 on charges stemming from the previous lab in Denver that had been shut down. The LSD that was made in Windsor came from one pound of lysergic acid that had originally been made in Italy, but had been purchased in London by Scully.

Supposedly it's some actual orange sunshine xtal from the 70s someone's been sitting on that they made into presses with tumeric. “By opening people’s minds, everyone would experience such a sense of love as to bring about world peace.” There were more people taking bad drugs, more people behaving badly. The experience I had for the first time I took acid was transcendental and it was a feeling of oneness with everything and everyone. In 1970, a cargo plane flew over 25,000 people at a rock concert and dropped thousands of acid tabs to the cheering crowd below.

Van der Heyden faced a softer, five-year stint in Canadian prison. They set up their own massive underground LSD operation, in a lab tucked away in the Vancouver suburb of Port Coquitlam. One day, in the mid-1980s, van der Heyden was tasked with the disposal of a number of the geology lab’s rare chemicals; working through an itemized manifest of compounds, he realized that some of the chemicals at hand could be combined to make 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA. Now, van der Heyden is in his early seventies with a stern, serious countenance that belies a life lived with tremendous joy and adventure. He wanted to really understand what produced such profound experience at such teeny-tiny, submicroscopic doses.
It seemed like a reasonable idea at the time — the brotherhood had been founded on a shared belief in LSD’s transformative effects. (It was during this time in prison that Travis made the bases and bowl for the hookahs). Operation BEL, as they called it, was a multi-state, multi-agency operation that executed warrants in Hawaii, Oregon, and California (including the ranch in Idyllwild) that resulted in 57 arrests and the seizure of around $8 million in drugs.

After John passed, Mike and Carol fell in love and carried on the message, spreading what they believe is a sacrament to be taken with intention. Archival photos and recreations in the film bring all these adventures to life. “I did 25 interviews over the course of seven years, and all during that time I kept trying to get to Mike and Carol. Another journalist researching the Brotherhood for a book shared notes with Kirkley for a few years, but while the publisher for the book had a deadline, Kirkley did not, and he held out to get to the heart of the story.
By May 1969, at their laboratory in Windsor, California, Nick Sand; his pregnant partner, Jill Henry; Tim Scully; and David Mantell had produced over a kilogram of LSD, enough for more than 4 million 300 μg doses. The powerful hallucinogen became the subject of research, mass media attention and thousands of scientific papers. The CIA examined the possibility of using the drug as a truth serum during the Cold War. Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann first discovered lysergic acid diethylamide, known as LSD or acid, in 1938 while trying to develop a blood stimulant for pharmaceutical company Sandoz. In 1996 the Canadian Mounties got their man – they raided Sand’s new lab and returned him to San Francisco and another nine years in jail before his release in 2001.
